Jake Herbert Prepares For World Championships, Discusses Overtime Experience

Jake Herbert, who coached at the Crystal Lake, IL, Overtime School of Wrestling in the spring and summer during his successful bid to make the USA Wrestling World Team, will be competing at the 2009 FILA World Championships on September 21-27, 2009, in Herning, Denmark at the 84 kg weight class.  He will be accompanied by Sean Bormet, his coach from the Overtime School of Wrestling in Naperville, IL.

Since securing his spot on the World Team on May 31, 2009, Jake has spent a lot of time training at the USA Wrestling training camp in Colorado Springs, CO.  Over the next year, Herbert will be splitting his time between Colorado Springs, where he'll be training with the United States World Team, and the Chicago area, where he hopes to help out Northwestern University, where he won the 2009 Hodge Trophy, and the Overtime School of Wrestling.

"I'm pretty pumped for the next year of my life: all I have to do is wrestle!" laughed Jake when asked about his plans for the near future.  "I'm just going to be traveling between Colorado Springs and Chicago. I'm really excited about that.

Herbert thoroughly enjoyed coaching at the Overtime School of Wrestling and looks forward to returning when his schedule permits it.

"It was a great experience," explained Jake.  "I enjoy kids and I enjoy wrestling.  I had so much fun that I can't believe I got paid to do it.  I always want to go up there. I really enjoy getting to work with the kids and the coaches.  I know coaching at Overtime made me a better coach and wrestler."

Jake also was quick to give credit to the Overtime coaching staff, along with the overall system in place at Overtime.

"Wrestling with Northwestern and Overtime made me the wrestler I am," he continued.  "The Overtime system works; it got me to where I am today.  I used the Overtime program, and that shows that it's a proven system that works at the highest level.  From kids on up to the top, it just shows that it can work at every single level."

Jake's goal is the Olympics in 2012, and the 2009 FILA World Championship Tournament is an important step for him, both as an athlete and as a coach.

"It's going to expose me to the best wrestlers in the world," Jake said.  "I can learn a lot myself, and I can teach it to others as well."
