July 28, 2003

Illinois freshman wrestler Donny Reynolds was recently named as one of eight members on the elite FILA Junior World Freestyle team, which will represent the United States at the Championships on Aug. 29-31 in Istanbul, Turkey.

Reynolds redshirted the 2003 season and is set to compete for the starting spot at 165 pounds, a weight class left vacant by senior NCAA Champion Matt Lackey. Reynolds was named to the world team after winning the 2003 FILA Junior National Championships at 163 pounds in Chattanooga, Tenn. He went undefeated in six straight matches, pinning Matt Pell of the Dave Schultz Wrestling Club in 5:38 in the finals.

He took seventh at the same tournament in 2002 and placed third at the ASICS/Vaughn Junior National Championships following the completion of his high school career. Reynolds was a two-time Illinois state champion in 2001 and 2002 at Providence Catholic, who took the team title four times during his prep career.
